Busted!

It was Lilly's birthday and my friend Katie (a fantastic photographer)was trying to get Addie to sing Happy Birthday on camera. She had been singing it all morning and then as soon as the camera was on her, and everyone was watching, she clamed up. Thats okay though because she gave us a different kind of footage!

The Happy Birthday Grandma video was taken with her morning look- hence the crazy hairdo. I think Addie is a little confused about all the birthdays coming and going, can you tell? Happy Birthday Mom! I love you!

Update

Shelley said I need to update my blog- I know, I couldn't believe it either! LOL
We didn't end up having to eat poi on our Thanksgiving turkey (thank goodness), but Justin and I were worried that the turkey would even turn out. We've only ever cooked one other one and it wasn't the best, (done on the outside, not in the middle). We got a few turkey tips from different sources and decided to use an online recipe, and a tip from our friend Megan to put cut up oranges in the cavity for mois'er meat. It turned out SO good, one of the best turkeys we've ever had, and the meat was incredibly mois'!
We ended up inviting a few families in the ward and some of Justin's co-workers for a total of 23! It was a total blast and we loved every minute of it, but we'd still trade it for being together with our extended families which we miss so much this time of year.
Speaking of family, we decided to use you all for our Christmas tree decorations this year. I was thinking how it would be a fun idea for the girls to have family pictures as ornaments and a few days later Haley said she had an idea to do the same thing. We bought our tree, (fake and prelit- what have we become?) the weekend after Thanksgiving and put only ribbon, popcorn strands, and family pictures on it. It looks amazing and the kids, especially Addie, love to go over to the tree and look at all the pictures of the people they love.
Lilly's birthday was last week and I gave her the option of spending the afternoon with mom or having a regular cake/presents party. She chose to spend the day with me, and we both enjoyed the one on one time. I took her to Build-A-Bear, which is called Hanai Bear out here and let her pick whatever she wanted. She picked a small white (groan) bear and three outfits for it. I'm lucky they only had a few outfits for the small bears or we could have spent way too much on a wardrobe for her new friend. She grinned the whole time and couldn't believe she finally had a Build-A-Bear friend like she's "wanted her whole life!" After that we went to find her a new dress (definitely a need) and then to lunch at Farrels. I told her she could have whatever she wanted on the menu so naturally she picked fries and a shake- wouldn't you? Because it was her birthday, they gave her a free scoop of the ice cream of her choice with any topping she wanted. When they brought it out she had to stand up while they made a bunch of noise and announced to the whole restaurant, "This is Lilly- today is her birthday, she's turning seven years old!" Then they sang Happy Birthday to her. When it was all over she sat down and said, "that was a little bit embarrassing"
When we were finished with lunch we went to Sports Authority to use the gift card from G-ma. Lilly got a new snorkel set and her own boogie board. She told me it was the "best birthday ever!"

The Church building we meet in was burned a couple years ago and is finally about done being rebuilt. Today there's a truck bringing a load of new furniture to be assembled. All the ward members are asked to come help unload the truck and put together the furniture. It seems a little "Extreme Home Makeover" to me. Kinda fun.
Our ward party is Friday and my friend from the ward was saying she and I should show off our Turbo Jam moves there. She is way into exercise and borrowed my DVDs. I'm not sure that would be appropriate since the theme is "the land of Jeruselem" and we're supposed to come dressed up in clothes from the time period of Christ's birth. I'll let you know if the shepherds can "houz it".

Lilly was sitting on my lap the other day and we were talking about how Santa only delivers to the kids that have been good this year. I asked her if she'd been good and she said "hmmmm..... not so much." I was shocked! What kid ever says that? I decided to ask my other kids the same question. Isabelle said, "wellllll..... a little bit good." Haley and Rachel both said no they hadn't! What is the deal? I mean there's honest and then there's insanely honest. I asked them what they could have done better and they all answered with the exact things they needed to work on. It was incredible! I'd never seen kids do that before! I think Santa will give honesty points this year for sure!

Much Ado

We have been busy having too much fun lately! A few weeks ago we went to the Valley of the Temples and walked through the Byodo-In temple there. The grounds were so pretty and it was a good chance to talk to the girls about other religions and what other people believe. We loved feeding the fish in the Koi ponds and watching them jump up to catch the food before the swans could get it. Seeing Budda all big in his glory made me think of Stephen and I wanted to light an incense stick for him and make an offering on his behalf. Unfortunately the matches were all gone. Sorry Steve.
Halloween was a blast too! The girls and I had a home school Halloween party with friends where we made marshmallow ghosts, spider web pizza, Oreo bats, Halloween masks, and bobbed for apples. Since we all have such big mouths, I had to time everyone to see who could do it the fastest. I was thinking Lilly would win but I think her loose tooth slowed her down. Haley got hers in 9 seconds- pretty good! Of course I had to show them who was boss and got mine in 7 seconds. That night we had homemade chili (tradition), and bread sticks and then went to our stake center for trunk or treat. We took 20 lbs of candy with us and ended up taking home 27 lbs!!!! (Yes, we weighed it). My favorite part of the trunk or treat was in the beginning after they told the kids what to do. They started up some music and the first song was Metallica's Neverland ( I think that's what its called). I laughed for five minutes. I'm pretty sure I've never heard Metallica played at the church. We ended the night with doughnuts and cider- also a tradition. It was a great Halloween.
Last weekend, Justin and I got to go to Kauai on a Best Vinyl trip. Justin was excited about the house that we were going to stay at. It was a multimillion dollar house with a 50 ft. water slide and a huge projector screen and an arcade. When I got there, the first thing I noticed was all the fruit trees. There was orange, lime, lemon, pumelo, manelo, avocado, macadamia nut, mango, grapefruit, etc. It was awesome. The first thing I did was go pick fruit and try it. The pumelo I picked was twice the size, at least, of a grapefruit! Andy and I made fresh guacamole for lunch that day-YUM!
Kauai was SO pretty- much prettier than Oahu. Before I got there, Justin went on an 8 mile hike with everyone to see a waterfall and played football on the beach. The day I was there, we went on a breathtaking hike to a cave with a hidden beach inside that housed some sea turtles. Justin had a water volleyball tournament that day too- haole's against locals- guess who won? The white boys!!! We also went and played in some huge waves at a gorgeous beach where Justin got to try out his surfing skills. I can definately see why they call Kauai the garden island. We're going back for sure!
We are now trying to talk ourselves into the fact that the holidays are approaching even though its 85 degrees. It just doesn't feel like Thanksgiving is a week away. We're planning on inviting some of Justin's co-workers over, that don't have family here, to join us. I wonder if we'll have to eat poi on our turkey?

Bodies!

We finally made it to the bodies exhibit! We went on Saturday after a busy morning of a daddy/daughter hike for the achievement girls (that's gonna leave me with some nice quiet time when they're all old enough), and HSM3. (Justin and I could barely contain our cookies during the show).
The bodies exhibit wasn't the first thing on Justin's list of fun but he ended up liking it more than he expected. The girls were pretty fascinated by the whole thing and had lots of questions. The best part was in the beginning when an old, creepy looking guy in a lab coat came up to the girls and in a VERY eerie, slow voice, said "Heeellllllooooooooo ladies...... can I help you with anything?" YIKES! He worked there (obviously) and I think he was purposefully trying to creep them out.
Okay, maybe that wasn't the best part. It could have been when Rachel was looking at one of the bodies that had bone and deep tissue and asked "is this a boy or a girl?"
Umm...... heelllooooo?!?! It has boy parts so it must be a.... BOY! I guess we need to have an anatomy lesson since she's not getting any baby brothers! WOW. Thats all I can say. Wow.
One of the neat things for the girls to see was the healthy lungs compared to a smokers lungs. That was a really good, powerful, visual for them.
The neatest part for me was seeing the embryos at different stages. That is something I've always wanted to see. The whole fetal development is so amazing.
If you're wondering if you should go...... DO IT!

Hiking!

The girls and I and some friends hiked up the Waimano trail. It was our first hiking experience here so far and we had a blast! When we first started out Lilly said it was the perfect place for alligators and snakes..... and if Hawaii had snakes.... it sure would have been! The trail was beautiful, overgrown and full of roots in the ground that we had to watch out for. On the way up we got to see our first real guava fruit (unfortunately it was starting to rot) and a really cool waterway tunnel that cut through the mountain and met up again on the trail, (which the kids got to hike through). The three miles seemed to go by so fast with all the fun we were having. At the top of the trail we were rewarded with some awesome strawberry guava plants that had plenty growing on them. They had a lot of edible seeds inside them but were really good and tasted a lot like strawberries. I wished we would have taken a bunch home to make jelly with.
On the way home we stopped at the worlds coolest McDonald's. We pulled through the drive through which was just a small little shed sized building. Just as I was starting to wonder how they got the food outside to the car.... we noticed that overhead was a conveyor belt bringing all the food from the main building over to the drive-through. It was fun to watch all those kids meals being sent over.

Another day in the life

Today was the primary program. All the songs are the same as they are all over the world, the kids grin and get nervous for their parts just like they do all over the world but there are a few differences here in Hawaii from the rest of the world.
The kids sat up front from the start of the meeting, including sacrament time. When we first arrived and the kids and I went to sit up front, the primary leaders gave us all a handmade, multi-colored yarn lei -blue, red and yellow. All the kids and teachers were supposed to "be in whites" (a white top and dark pants or long skirts). The contrast of the leis with the white looked very nice and Hawaiian. I was amazed at how good the sunbeams were for the whole time before the program even started.
All, (okay most) of the primary kids had their parts memorized- NOT something that happens in other places anymore- and did so well!
After the meeting the bishop invited the whole primary to his house for lunch right after church. I tried to imagine our previous bishop handling that with over 1/3 of the ward being primary aged kids.
There were about 60 people at his house where all the adults (bishopric, leaders) served all the kids first. It was really nice and the kids loved the attention and to feel appreciated. Justin volunteered us in bishopric meeting to bring fettuccine alfredo. Bishop didn't even know what that was. He does now. hehehe

To totally change the subject, we finally got ourselves a ceiling fan yesterday along with some deck chairs and a BBQ. Definitely all necessities. After watching our electric bill sky rocket and then remain the same despite our other efforts, we decided to try a fan and keep the A/C down more often. We'll see if it helps. Justin is now trying to put up the fan with the help of three little girls.... "daddy can I help?" I'm counting down the minutes until he says "okay, that's it, everybody leave me alone.... go make some cookies or something!"
I think he just asked Haley for a wire connector.....he was surprised that she handed him the right thing... maybe this will work after all.

Family pictures

Saturday we got our family pictures done for the first time ever. Yes, I said the first time EVER! We went to the Moana Lua Gardens and met with a photographer. After she took some of the family, we had the girls put on fairy skirts and wings and she took some pictures of them as fairies. Lilly and Bella's room will be a fairy room and I didn't want just any picture in there, so we'll take one of all the girls and frame it. The photographer got the best picture of Addie..... its worthy of an Anne Geddes.
As soon as she puts them on her website and gives me the password, you can check them out. Let me know if you want to see them.
Addie loved looking at the digital pictures in the camera after the lady had taken some of her, and ALL the girls loved twirling around in their fairy skirts and dancing around on the grass barefoot. It was a fun time whether the pictures turn out or not. Justin might say otherwise- he thought it'd be a ten minute process. LOL
While we were there, the photographer gave me the best compliment ever. She said, 'its really nice to see a ten year old that's not obsessed." I asked her what she meant and she told me that most young girls she works with are obsessed over Hannah Montana or other similar things. She said our girls seemed to not be so worldly. That was a really nice comment that makes all the daily grind seem worthwhile.

New word for the week

V-O-G
Vog= a fog like inversion caused by volcanic dust drifting over from the Big Island.
Yes, a real word.

FHE

Monday night we were invited to the Bishops house for FHE and dinner (because there's always food at functions here). We had the typical spaghetti with the addition of rice on the side (a given out here), and bread. The Bishop and and one of his counselors asked Justin if he wanted some fish with his meal. He said "sure... I'll have some fish!" They served it up just like that...... a fish. Luckily for Justin, it was cooked! We asked what the name of the fish was but like usual, they spoke so quickly and softly its hard to repeat, and especially write what they said it was- but we were told they are hard to catch here. The fish was served with a coconut milk and some bread fruit, neither of which Justin could finish and settled on finishing the fish. Well..... he thought he finished his fish until he looked over at Bishop who was sucking out the eye balls and eating the whole head and everything else besides the bones. We're talking EVERYTHING! There wasn't much on his plate when he was done.
YUM YUM!
For dessert we had s'mores and learned how to roast marshmallows it Bishops way.... start it on fire, wait for it to get black, blow out the fire. Haley seemed to particularly like this method. I tried to teach Bishop the "Rocky Mountain Way" by slowly roasting mine as if it were on a spit, but to no avail- everyone seemed to prefer his method.
YUM!
For dessert number two (yes, I said two) we had cake and ice cream for someones birthday. I'm not sure if it was then or at the pasta with rice part that I remembered what I said just before we moved here. It was something along these lines,
"I'm going to loose weight once we move and stop going to all these family functions with all this good food."
UMMM.... WRONG!
So much for looking like the Beckhams! I'm thinking Kristy Alley and Brudda IZ are more like it.

Our FHE lesson was really good with a fun activity. It was a "great time" as Rachel would say.

A loss in the family, I feel better and LABOR DAY

So, I lost the diamond out of my wedding ring. Sad, huh? I scoured the house top to bottom. I vacuumed one room at a time and then sifted through the dirt. I cleaned out the car- detailed it really.... I swept up the garage, I looked in the lint collector of the dryer and I'm thinking its at the beach somewhere. Maybe someone will find a diamond in their oyster instead of a pearl! The only place I haven't looked is in the sink traps. (whatever the goose neck things under the sink are called). I'm still having a little hope.
For those of you that don't know, I had a bad couple days last week and had to get some time to myself. I dropped the kids off with Megan and went to get my hair done. What does a bad day, a mom out of steam and a beauty salon equal??? You guessed it...... a drastic change!!! I love drastic, don't you? My hair is no longer light like the rest of my family.... it is DARK, DARK, DARK!!! I don't think it was this dark last time. I sat down in the chair and saw a picture by the mirror and told the hair stylist I wanted mine like that. It has some red in it too. I wasn't sure at first if I liked it, but now that its done its initial fading, I've decided I like how it looks. After I left the salon, I decided.... I feel better. That's all I needed, just a break and time to myself.

For Labor Day we went to check out the Pali Lookout. Originally we thought it was a short hike with a good island view, but when we got there we discovered that its really just a parking lot with a 40 foot walk to the lookout itself. The girls were a little disappointed we didn't get to hike at all but the view was amazing and even the drive there was really pretty. The roads were lined with dense foliage (a good word for the day) and trees with hanging vines. It almost reminded me of a drive in the canyon... almost. On our way back, I made Justin pull over so we could swing from the vines. It was too irresistible. The kids had a great time, even Addie kept saying "Addie turn, Addie turn" wanting more and more. If only I had my cheetah outfit Laura gave me.....hmmmm.... Tarzan and Jane.
Later we bought some stuff to play baseball and kickball and went and spent time at the park with friends, then we went home to run in the sprinklers while dinner cooked and ended the night with a movie. I can't remember the name of it, and would really rather not, it was NOT worth the time we spent watching it.
I told Justin that had to be one of my favorite holidays ever. We had a great time and it was relaxing and we did something out of the norm. FUN!

In home school we are finishing a unit about taking care of our bodies inside and out. Justin and I considered taking the girls to the Bodies Revealed exhibit. I want to go bad, but I'm not sure how the girls would handle it. One or two of them would think it was cool, and the others would maybe have bad dreams or think it was gross. The exhibit is only here until October 31. I told Justin we should go for Halloween.... wouldn't that be awesome!!! Creepy!

Take a deep breath

So, this week has been a little harder than most. We started potty training and quit already. Addie wasn't as ready as I thought she was. The girls have been at each others throats, and home school has me running on empty. If anyone has any positive thoughts, comments or encouragement.... they would really be appreciated!

This weekend is Labor Day and we're thinking we'll finally go to the Pali Lookout, since we've been wanting to for several weeks now. Its a short hike with a really good view of the island at the end. Hopefully we won't be disappointed. Other than that, we'll probably just hit the beach like every other weekend.

(I added a bigger picture at the bottom of my blog of us at the PCC with Shelley, Chad and Makenzie)

Last Sunday, Lilly got the opportunity to speak in sacrament meeting. In our ward we have a youth speaker and a primary speaker. It was her turn. She was totally fine until right before and then I could tell she was getting really nervous. She asked me to come up with her, which I did, but just sat on the bench behind her. When she started her talk she said, "Brothers and sisters, good morning and aloooooooooooHA!" It was really cute (and kinda funny), the whole ward was smiling. Then she realized that it was talk time and her voice quivered and I thought she might cry, but she didn't. She made it through the whole 2 minutes. The best part was looking down in the congregation and seeing Justin's face. He was so proud of her. We all were.

The only other excited thing that's happened is that I bought a TON of meat from a meat vendor that was going door to door. Shelley said that was really weird that I bought meat from some weird guy I didn't know. It was, but we're trying to do new things, and it was a good deal. I told her though, that if I mysteriously disappear later, it was the meat man!!! We bought beef, chicken and a variety of seafood. I was nervous about the seafood a little because we don't usually make that but the first night we had stuffed flounder which turned out pretty good. Even Rachel liked it.

Today is a rainy day and I'm loving it. Its nice to have change sometimes. I'm really going to miss the fall air and the crunch of the leaves....... take a deep breath for me!

Come and Visit.......... anytime!

We have been having a ton of fun! Shelley came out to visit last week with her family and we went to visit all the tourist sights we've been holding out on. We went to the Dole Plantation, the PCC, Pearl Harbor, and a bunch of beaches. It was a great week, we already miss them more than we should!
We didn't get to go out to the memorial at Pearl Harbor because all the boat rides out there were closing down for the day but we walked around the museum and the grounds as much as we could. Rachel can't wait to go back and go in the submarine. She is so fascinated with boats and planes right now.
The PCC was also fun. We went to the whole day event with the show and the luau and everything. Some of the things the kids got to do included throwing spears, learning to hula, fishing, and watching a movie about coral reefs. We weren't able to get to all the villages including Samoa which I hear is the best one, so we'll be glad to go back next time.
Shelley and Chad went on a shark dive and got me excited to try it sometime while we're here. Justin is finally warming up to the idea and says he'll do it with me, too. They got to see about 20 sharks, and took some great pictures!
They also took Haley and Rachel to hike Diamond Head and snorkel at Hanauma Bay, while I watched the little ones. The girls had a blast and can't wait to take Justin and I to Diamond Head. That was their favorite part.
While they were here, I got treated to some homemade creme brulee. YUM!!! I bought the ramekins and a torch so we can make more later!!! Thanks Chad- I'm still thinking about how good it was!
The worst part of them being here was when they had to leave. The island gave them a farewell gift of an amazing, huge, and bright rainbow. It was one of the best I've seen here (and there are quite a few). It lasted for a long time and didn't disappear until we had said our goodbyes. It really did seem that it was meant for them. Addie has been saying, "miss you Kenzie." We'll miss you guys!

We had a first time experience of having the missionaries over for dinner this week and since they are both from Utah, we teased them that we were making them tuna casserole for dinner. We didn't really, we had hamburgers, but I DID make them some jello to help them feel right at home. They were so excited when I pulled that out of the fridge!
They were able to tell us a little more about the people and way of life here. It was fun to have them over and nice to have them leave a spiritual message at the end.

Justin is getting another foreman out here next week and is excited that he won't be doing as much of the labor anymore. He has been really busy at work and church- with his new calling, and learning tons. He really looks forward to the weekends when he can relax at the beach- preferably Waiamea Bay, his favorite.

We have been thinking so much about everyone we miss and all the upcoming events we're going to miss..... like babies being born...... we hope it goes well for you and wish we could be there to see (and hold), the new arrivals- a baby boy cousin and friend's baby girl. We miss you guys!

Lychee, home school and "can you believe it?!!"

Last week, we were driving home from the Library and saw a huge sign calling my name-
"ice cold lychee". I didn't have any cash on me but, luckily one of the girls had a $10 bill. I pulled over so fast, you can probably see skid marks there still. I bought a pound of lychee for $5 out of the cooler in the back of some guys truck. Where else can you do THAT in the U.S.?? After Mikes comment about having lychee in La Reunion I was excited to try it. The fruit is about as big as a big marble, maybe a little bigger. The skin is tough and bumpy- like you would imagine a hard raspberry to feel. They are really easy to peel and once you get your nail into it, the skin just comes right off. The inside reminded me of a fourth grade science day where our teacher dissected a cow eyeball for us. It looked just like that... round, white, slippery, and "mois'".
Mike had warned us of the seed inside so we took a small bite, not knowing when we'd hit pit. Turns out the seed was about as big as a sunflower seed inside its shell, and was the color of an apple seed.
After the pickled mango I didn't know if Justin would taste the lychee but he was the first one in. He described it like a white grape flavor, which it was. Over all we would give it a 7. No one LOVED it but it was pretty good. We'd eat it again. The missionaries came over that night and we gave some to them. They hadn't had it before but said they'd tasted something like it... I wonder what THAT was???
On Saturday we went to Costco and I saw a fruit called a pluot. I think its a mix between a plum and an apricot. It looked really good and I'll have to budget in for it next week.
The two older girls got invited to a princess birthday party for a girl down the road. They got to dress up, paint nails, do make-up, play games, got a tea cup and candy and had a blast! The mom had hired someone to come in and do the party for about $300!!! I told Justin we should go into that business because I do all that all the time with the girls anyway.... may as well make money doing it, right?
No, wrong.......
I shouldn't do it anymore than I already am!!!

We started our home school last Thursday since all the kids here are back to school already. For the first week or so we will be doing a unit study on Sea Turtles. I wanted to start with something fun but new to the girls so they would get excited about home school. Its mostly for fun but we have already learned tons- there are 7 kind of sea turtles, what they eat- each specie eats different things. We studied their life cycle, we learned about their shell patterns and that they always come back to the same beach they were born to lay their eggs. All of these topics have brought up different ones like- what is a reptile, what is a carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, etc. We've had fun. The girls have made sea turtles, written stories about them and looked through books about them.
We also do small topics each day like learning our new home phone number, (yes, we finally got one), learning question words - who, what, when, where, why, how- and how to use them. Today we talked about being good homemakers and what we can do now to help them be good homemakers when they're older. They are doing a "homemaking contest" this week and can each win a prize for how well they do at the end.
We have worked on letters and numbers a bit but not too much until next month when school will really get going. I have a list of benchmarks for them from the Hawaii Board of Education, which I'll use to guide me in our lessons. I feel like I'll learn just as much or more than they will this year!

Oh, my word!!! Can you believe it???? Addalie is only 18 months old and already trying to potty train HERSELF! She takes off her own pants and diaper and says "change". She's used the toilet a couple times, and is constantly saying "potty?" I caught her making "the face" and she said "pooping?"
I don't know what to do, this is the first time any of my kids has been interested this young. I'm not sure I'M ready for her to be trained yet..... she is so little and I don't want to drag her around the island looking for bathrooms all the time!
The biggest problem???? How in the world will we find panties small enough?

New responsibilities and pickled mango

WE SAW SEA TURTLES!!! Justin and I went to the beach for his birthday- without the girls this time- and decided to pick a new one. We were walking into the water to snorkel and almost stepped on a turtle! Later we went for a walk down the beach and saw about 10 more sticking their heads in and out of the water. We knew how much the girls would love to see them so, of course we went back the next day. They loved it- except for Bella who for some unexplained reason wouldn't go in the water that day. (I think she was afraid of the turtles even though she wouldn't admit it.)

We've also had some excitement at church in the last couple of weeks. First off they called and asked Justin if we would speak in church, then they asked him to help with the sacrament, which he hasn't done in years. Then, that same day they asked if we would give the sacrament mtg. prayers, and then just when we sat down in Sunday School someone came and pulled us out to give Justin the calling of Executive Secretary! Whoa! After church that day Justin said (jokingly) that he felt a little picked on. You definately can't coast in the gospel out here- it'll be good for us. Our ward is having a campout this month that goes from a Thursday to the next Tuesday! A week long ward campout???
So, we gave our talks on Sunday and survived. Justin almost didn't since he had to re-write his whole talk Sunday morning because his computer went psycho on him. The funny part was that a portion of his talk on gratitude was about being greatful for our trials. I guess the Lord was helping him have a first hand experience the morning of!

This week we're focusing on getting homeschool put together so we can start in the next few weeks. The kids here start school in a week or two and we'll probably start at the same time. This is one of those things where I know its best but I can't believe I'm actually going to brave it.

We finally tried pickled mango. Justin was the first to try it and almost threw up, so what do you think the kids expected? Of course, no one liked it. I gave it a fair chance and although its not worthy of Justin's reaction, its not my favorite thing either. Its not the "pickled" you think of when you think of beets, its just a sugary, syrupy coating all over the fruit that gives it a red tint. We probably won't be buying that again...... until one of you come visit!!! I was hoping to try some lychee, which is a small, red fruit that grows in clusters like grapes. You have to peel it, I guess and it resembles an eyeball or maybe a grape. We looked to buy some but found out that they are going out of season. I hope we can find some before we have to wait till next season. There used to be signs all over that said "ice cold lychee" I should have stopped sooner.

Only 17 more days until our first visitor!!! I can't wait!

Repairs

This week we havn't been on-the-go as much due to some technical difficulties at home. Our hot water heater has been leaking so we waited at home all day for the plumber to come out and repair it. The washing machine isn't draining and I think its either a broken belt or a clog somewhere (maybe a gecko or a cockroach). Justin is super busy and I can't move the thing over myself to try to figure it out so we're waiting for the fix it guy to come out but just got informed today that it won't be 'till next week.
MMmmmmm... 7 people, one of whom changes her clothes several times a day just for fashion's sake (Lilly), one of them a baby, one of them a hard working come-home-dirty kinda guy...... this isn't the best situation to be in. Justin suggested going to the laundromat this weekend but I can't justify plopping my money into a washing machine when I've got a big soaker sink in the garage. I've been hand washing all week... what's one more???

The other reason we've been at home is to water and take care of the grass seed we planted on Monday and Tuesday. With the sun shining all the time here I don't dare leave for too long and have it all dried up when I get back. We'll all be so glad when the grass comes in and the girls finally have a grassy backyard to play in.

We're still trying to decide what to do for the 4th. We'll go to the beach for sure and watch the fireworks- maybe hike to a waterfall with the kids or try some pickled mango!!! We're sad we don't get to be there for Savhannah's birthday but we're sure she won't even remember us once she sees Hannah Montana LIVE!!!

On Friday Megan and I took the kids to the Honolulu Zoo. It was a fairly decent zoo with some pretty fun things to see. When we first got there, we saw a flock of flamingos all resting their heads under their wings and standing on one leg. The girls were really excited to see flamingos in real life. Then we went to the monkeys which was honestly the highlight of the day. I can't even remember the name of the monkeys that caught our attention the most because I was too enthralled with watching them. I've never been to a zoo where the animals were that active before! You should have seen them swinging around..... just like you see in the movies, and then the noise they made.... it was so loud and fun! I had to shout just for the girls to hear me above the noise!
Later at the chimp exhibit we were watching three big chimps that were just sitting there peacefully when all of a sudden one of them ran towards us and banged on the glass. It was really LOUD and right in front of Addie's face (she was sitting in a stroller). I'm really surprised it didn't make her cry. My heart was definitely beating a little harder. We had a fun time.
Justin and the older girls went crab fishing again yesterday, (with nets this time) and caught 5 crabs. They put them all back though because none were big enough to eat. We heard if you go at night its better... we'll try that next time.

This morning we had a mini disaster and ended up not making it to church. About an hour before church started, Addalie found some purple nail polish in Haley's closet and somehow got it open. Haley found her first and by the time she got there, Addie had nail polish all over her right foot and splattered on the carpet!!! When I found out, I saw the carpet first and was trying really hard not to get mad or frustrated and then I saw Addalie's foot and all I could do was laugh. The whole thing was purple. It looked like it wasn't getting any blood or something. So, I had to go to the store to get some polish remover and something to try to get the stain out. It's most of the way faded out and Justin is going to use his mad carpet skills to try to cut out the rest. If all else fails, we can get a seaming iron and use the extra piece of carpet here to patch it up. I guess we're nearing the terrible twos or something.... we're always having to keep constant watch on Addie's cute little trouble hands.
Anyone had a success removing polish from carpet? Any advice would be greatly appreciated and probably needed sometime in the future. With all these girls its bound to happen again sooner or later, right?

Here to stay

Last night I asked the girls
"who likes Hawaii?" they all said "me!" and raised their hands, (including Addie).
Then I asked, "who's glad we came?" they all raised their hands and said "me!"
Then I asked, "who's ready to go back to Utah?"
It was dead silent. No one's ready yet. They all miss everyone, (Rachel was crying over missing Savhannah, Addie asks to call Shane) but no one wants to actually go back. That's good I guess since we're here to stay a while.
The girls are LOVING the library and have read over 50 books already! Unfortunately I've only read 1. Sad, but true. Not that I don't want to read more, but with 5 kids, someone is always interrupting or needing attention, (ahem.... ADDIE!)

We were at the Pearl Ridge mall, spending the girls birthday gift cards from Grandma, and saw some really cool lego sculptures. There was one of a huge spider, a life size dog, a swimmer, a rock climber, a full size man, and tons of others, they were really cool! The girls LOVED them. After walking around and checking them out, I bought the girls a chocolate covered gecko to eat... mmmmm. A couple of them were really worried that it was a real gecko!
The mall is split into two sections and has a little monorail type thing that connects them. It costs 50 cents a person to ride it one way. The girls begged to ride it and I thought it would be a fun, (cheap) way to please them and do something different. While on the ride over to the other side, we sat by a couple from Australia who also had 5 girls. The wife said her husband knew how to make boys, he just wouldn't tell her. They were here on a shopping trip for the 9th time. This is their favorite shopping destination. I asked where all the great shopping places are since we're new here and they told me they love the outlets at Waikele (which I had been to) and they also love... are you ready for this...... Walmart, Kmart, and Ross!!!!!!
I decided not to follow their shopping advice.
We also got to see Pearl Harbor from the roof of the mall (parking lot). Finally.... I've been trying to get a good glimpse of it but hadn't till now.

On Saturday we tried to go crabbing with Megan and Andy, but an orange Home Depot bucket and chicken legs weren't really the best traps so we're going to get a crab pod this weekend and try again. Free crab anyone??? Any good crab recipes???

The girls have been using the new snorkel gear, and floaties we got them..... we just need some more towels! There are never enough towels around when you swim so often!

Rain and Church and stuff

So we finally got that good Hawaiian rain we've been waiting for. It's dumped on us twice. The first time we were home and within just a couple minutes there was a river of water on the road outside, running down to the drain. The second time was on Sunday when we were about to have a BBQ at our friends house. That had to be moved indoors.
Speaking of Sunday, that was our first time to church here. I had found our church on mapquest and even seen the road it was supposed to be on so when sunday came, we weren't too concerned about finding it. Well.... we drove up and down the street twice and didn't see a church. I started wondering if it was in the grade school there or in some other building. By this time church was already starting. We decided to try one more time and this time we saw a church steeple peeking through some trees off to the side. We took a side road and finally saw it. When we got inside there was a member walking out of the chapel who let us know there were some open seats right up front!!! (OOOOOooooooo, yea! Right up front!)
We walked in and started going to the front. I could feel dozens of eyes starring at us. Picture this if you can..... a chapel full of dark hair, 15 minutes into the meeting, (LATE!), a group of 7 walks in. FIVE of them kids! ALL of those are GIRLS! ALL 7 are BLOND! (and I had to be wearing my heels that day.... what was I thinking???????) My first thought was "whoa, look at all the black hair!" My second was also "whoa!" when I looked up front and didn't see any caucasions sitting on the stand. That was a bit of a shock, I was just praying that Lilly didn't say anything about how "there are a lot of black and brown people here". I found out later that Justin was praying for the same thing. Its not that you don't expect it to be like that, its just crazy to see when you're used to a bunch of whities. I don't remember the last time the girls sat that still and that quiet during a sacrament meeting, I think they were a bit shocked too.
Because it was father's day, they gave candy leis to all the men and the bishopric had additional flower leis. That was pretty fun and came in useful for Justin when he had Addie in priesthood. When we seperated for classes, a group stayed in the chapel for a Samoan class and later relief society split into English and Samoan groups. I got out of most of relief society because the bishop wanted to sit down and talk to me and Justin just to get to know us. I was afraid I might get my primary calling on the first day.....next week maybe.
The girls were nervous to go but after church was over, they all said they liked it and had fun.
Church was only 2 1/2 hours because they are remodeling the building after some kids set fire to it a while ago. It's an old building so they probably needed an update anyway. Everyone was so nice and we met a ton of people, including Sister Brown who has homeschooled before and had some good info. I think I got kissed on the cheek about 3-4 times. (Definately an adjustment coming from an emotionally handicapped family) I didn't mind, it was just... different. Okay, maybe I even liked it.

Everyone gets a card

Yesterday, I had the girls all excited to go to the library. We got everyone ready and drove the 15 minutes down to Kapolei, just to find out it was closed for Kamehameha Day. Who knew??? Earlier that morning I had walked down the road to a newspaper vending machine thing so I could check out the paper and see if there were an activities going on for the holiday that the girls and I could go to. I was hoping for a parade or something. There wasn't even a word about it in the whole paper! So much for that, I think it was just an excuse for some of the businesses to close down and everyone to play for a day..... the lagoons we like to go to were CROWDED! We ended up at a friends pool for the afternoon, which made for easier clean up. (NO SAND!)

The girls saw some webkinz in the window of a shop called Bundles of Aloha (a baby botique) and after quite a lot of jibber jabber about it I finally told Lilly that I'd take her today to get one. I thought that would make her shush up about it for a few minutes but all it did was bring on a load of questions..... "when we wake up, can we go get the webkinz?..... are we going there first tomorrow?....... After I get my webkinz, can I play webkinz on the computer?......"

I thought if I heard the word webkinz one more time, I might drown myself in the ocean! I finally just told her if she asked me about it anymore, we wouldn't go until Friday.... that worked.

Until this morning. As soon as everyone was up, Lilly asked if it was time to go. (It was only 7am.)

Finally we were all ready to go and it was a reasonable time. Since the whole purpose of driving that way was to go to the library, we stopped there first. The library was fantastic! It is the youngest library in Hawaii and we found out from the librarian that all the libraries here are connected so we can borrow books from one library and return at a totally different one! That was cool.... not only that but we can use our cards at any of them too! I love that! I was actually a little worried that they wouldn't give us cards because we live in Waianae and the library was in Kapolei. Yeah! I had to fill out five applications, one for each of us, and when I took it up to the counter the lady said "all of you?" But she said it with a smile instead of the normal shock of seeing a family with 5 kids. She asked how long we had lived here and when I told her not quite two weeks yet, she smiled even more and said, "and the library's one of the first places you visit... that's wonderful!" After getting our cards, we signed up for the summer reading program that just started and only lasts 5 weeks- since there's year round school here. The girls get weekly prizes for reading and are pretty excited about it.

I told the girls that one of the books they check out has to be on something they want to learn more about. Bella got a book about dolphins, Lilly picked a book on all kinds of sea life, Rachel picked sea turtles and Haley picked Egyptions. (Way to be different!) I tried to pull a Karen Marshall and just grabbed a bunch of books, hopefully I find one in the bunch that I like. (I like that method, Karen, it was fun!) When we checked out the books we were helped by the same librarian that gave us the cards and she just smiled the whole time. I think she was really impressed by the girls book choices and that they were excited to read and have their own library cards.

When we left, to our surprise, it was raining!!! A real rain! We've only had a few drops on a couple different days but it was really raining! The one thing I noticed is that no one was running in from the rain, they all just walk around like they almost don't notice it. Once we were outside, I realized why. It felt lighter and mistier than it looked and it was warm rain, just like Justin said. I was a little dissapointed because I've been hoping for the Hawaiian down pour where it drops buckets in just a few minutes and then its sunny again. Maybe next time.

After the library we FINALLY went to get Lilly her webkinz. She picked a pink and white cat (no surprise) and named it strawberry. They were doing a buy one get one half off sale so, since she had extra money, she decided to get one for Bella too. She picked her a tiger. Bella was so super excited and I think a little shocked that Lilly did that for her- she named the tiger, Fudge.

Needless to say, as soon as we got home, the girls headed straight for the computer. If I hadn't given them a 30 minute computer time limit/day, they'd still be on it right now, I'm sure- instead, their reading their new library books!!!

Time flies

The last few months have gone by so fast and we've packed a ton of stuff into no time at all. With Justin being out of town a lot over the last year, we wanted to do a family vacation and spend some time together. We planned a fun trip to Disneyland, originally for the week of Haley and Rachel's birthdays but once our life changed because of our move, we had to reschedule for March, the week of Isabelle's birthday. Mindy and Jared came along with their kids and we were so glad they did.... it was great time with the cousins before we had to move.
When we were planning the trip we realized Justin hadn't used his Tom Petty race car experience yet and it was going to expire in August. We decided he better use it and scheduled that for the same week as the Disneyland trip- since we were going that direction anyway (it was in Vegas). We were gone from Sunday to Sunday- a crazy, busy, long vacation!

Haley and Rachel decided they wanted to do one last birthday party with their cousins before we left so we invited all the girl cousins (around their age) from both sides of the family. I think their was around 11 girls there....... it was a BLAST!!! We had pizza and played a couple games including decorating cupcakes and the skittles game where you try to suck skittles up onto the end of a straw and deposit them in your own cup before someone rolls doubles and its their turn. The object: to get as many skittles as possible because in the end you get to eat them all! We also watched GAMEPLAN and played a get to know you game so the cousins from each side could meet each other. I was a little worried about someone getting left out or their feelings hurt but as far as I could tell, everyone got along great! It really was a great time! The only problem came when I was watching the girls together and realized that would be one of the last times for a long time that we would all be together like that. I had to focus on Madelyn's infectious laugh in order not to let them see me sad.
Justin was gone to Hawaii for the whole month of April, working hard and saving their backs once again. The girls and I packed up the house and finished last minute things before we had to be out on May 13th. After that, for a week we stayed at Allyson and Dustin's for a week and watched their kids while they went to London. The girls had a great time there too especially Bella who loved spending time with Kate. The highlight that week for all of them, I think, was when the ice cream truck came by and Justin bought them all a treat. Despite all the fun I think Kate and Bree were glad to see us go.
Our last ten days were spent at Shelley and Chad's (best hosts EVER!) Shelley made cinnamon rolls with the girls, bought chips "just for Justin" and provided super good food that we needed in those last few crazy days. But best of all she provided me with more time with her.... I miss you Shelley! I told her we should have been roommates. (But then again, maybe not. Its only been the last few years that we've really been good friends). The only thing I regret about staying there is not being able to clean her bathroom before we left and "de-marshallizing" (she knows what that means.)
During those last few days we also had FANTASTIC family parties with the Marshalls and Wrays. We had a BBQ with the Marshalls at Mindys and played games at the park. It was perfect except that Rob couldn't make it! (We missed you!). We had a great planned out Luau put on by the Wrays where we got to have Mahi Mahi, relay races and show the girls what a coconut is like on the inside... they even got to try it.
The night before we left I spent time with my family in the temple and Justin took the girls to spend one last night with Nana. We both wished we could have been both places but felt like we were where we needed to be. The only thing I wish I could change was that I didn't get to say goodbye to my FABULOUS in-laws, (no I'm not being sarcastic or trying to brown nose, they truely are the best!)
Friday morning came quick. Shelley got up early and made us really good pancakes (Amy's recipe- thanks!) and Allyson surprised us by coming to say goodbye and bringing doughnuts! Sometimes you guys are too much! Even Mike showed up to say good-bye since he wasn't able to come to the temple the night before. Abby and Jeff came to help the emotions stay at bay (my request) and to help my parents drive us to the airport.

Now were here and it seems like we always have been. Its crazy how easily you can slip into a new life. I hope you like the pictures I've posted. I thought I should do something other than the beach and Hawaii since thats all I might have for a while.
I keep checking airplane ticket prices for you all..... So far they're still around $650. I'm crossing my fingers they come down so you can all come visit! We love you!

A little too much fun????

I don't know if its legal to have this much fun!
Several of you have told me I need to set up a blog, so guess what???? I did it and didn't need any help!!! I am so proud of myself, afterall it wasn't that long ago that I needed help to cut and paste!
I'm posting some pictures of what we've done so far. Obviously most of them are the beach because that's about what we do everyday. Anyone feeling sorry for us??? I actually feel bad for Justin who works 30 feet from the beach sometimes and can't stop to play. He's really looking forward to this weekend. We're going to try to go on a short hike and to the beach.... AGAIN! (Yes, Mom, we're using sunscreen... everytime... lots of it!) Thanks again to you Wray ladies who helped put together beach bags for the girls. The 5 bottles of sunscreen are about half gone already!
I think we'll also work on our backyard a little more. Haley and I have pulled all the weeds including three cherry tomato plants that were out of control. We originally wanted to save one of them but after trying to make sense of it, we decided it wa too big of a mess and just ripped it out. We want to plant a small garden and then HAWAIIAN BEAUTIFY the rest! I can't wait. The front of the yard actually looks really nice because its been maintained by the association here but the back and side yard were all weeds.
We'll also be making a Cosco trip soon... hopefully it will save us money compared to Safeway. We're crossing our fingers!
We havn't seen any banana trees yet, the girls keep looking. But we've seen coconut and something that is either mango or papaya... I'll need Dad to come visit so he can tell us whats what. We've seen the pineapple plantation but we'll wait to go there until one of you comes to visit. We've also seen some black swans and some military jets. Those were both really cool!
We still havn't been over to Honolulu or Waikiki or Diamond Head..... we have to save something for later, right? Actually we'll be returning our rental van tonight at the airport... maybe we'll check out Honolulu while we're there.
We miss you all and hope summer break is full of lots of great plans! (including visiting us!)

In front of the giraffes... my favorite animal at the zoo

Flamingos

Flamingos
It was fun to watch the flamingos all pop their heads up at once.

Check out the rainbow!

Addie made quick friends with Carson (or friends little boy)
